Letter from Judy Eckenrode for all Toddler Volunteers

Toddler Volunteers Handout from Judy Eckenrode
This handout is based on the July 5, 2015,
10 AM Meeting at church.
I would like to know who has all their clearances in. The board of elders has requested that all volunteers have this completed no later than July 12, 2015. This includes not only background checks but also completion of the online course training on reporting child abuse and signing the last page of the church’s policy and procedures handbook. Let me know if you have not received the handbook.
Please note the ratio of adults to children for this age group. At this point we have less than 4 children under the age of 3, so we shouldn’t have difficulty meeting this requirement. However, due to the growth of our class, I would like to have an additional adult in addition to the usual 2 scheduled whenever we have 9 or more children. Let me know if you could help to fill in when our numbers are up. To stay within the required ratios, find out the ages of all children that are visiting. Also let me know as soon as possible when you cannot be here on your scheduled Sunday. I need time to find replacements before the children arrive.
Also note that all children should be supervised when using the bathroom. I suggest one adult stay at the door of the restroom to assist as needed. There are gloves available to help those children who are in the toilet training stage that need help with wiping. Older preschoolers may need reminders to flush the toilet and wash their hands.
Because we do have a mixed age group, keep the lesson short and simple. I do suggest you do accompanying projects with a few children at a time.
Inform parents if you are experiencing a particular issue with their child that day. Asking what approach works best with that child will foster cooperation between parents and staff.
Remember that most of the equipment in our room is on loan to us from Peach Tree Preschool. If you see children misusing or abusing it, give instructions as to proper use. And if they don’t follow through, direct them elsewhere, or remove it temporarily. At the end of the service, leave the room presentable for class the next day.
Once all the forms mentioned in the handbook are made available to us, I will put them in the basket on the big cabinet. I suggest one adult stay near the door to remind parents to sign in/sign out their children and make sure they leave with the designed pick up person while another adult directs the children to put the toys away. Once the floor has been cleared of toys; put out some books, puzzles, or table toys on the table for children that are waiting for their parents.
Thanks for your help. I appreciate the level of participation from our church body considering we are a small church.
